I am interested in having surgery and Dr. Ku suggested I have lap-band or Vertical sleeve. Anybody have this and regret doing either of these? Please let me know. Thanks

You might want to post this in the general forum or your state forum for more responses.

I agree that you should post this on lots of different boards to get a variety of responses--try the lap band forum, etc.

I had my RNY on Dec 1st, but my mother had the lap band about 3 years ago and at first, she loved it--she was able to lose about 85 pounds. She did have trouble with certain foods and did throw up with certain foods or from eating too quickly or for no reason at all. But, nothing is fool-proof.
But, last April, on Easter, she spontaneously began having Reflux---constant reflux that never went away after that. She watched what she ate, but would still get reflux, even with water! The doc did tests to see if the band was slipping, but the tests came back showing no slip. Finally, they saw she needed her gall bladder out (neither here nor there) but while taking out the gall bladder, he saw that her band was sliding up and down! So, whenever they took the pics to look for a slip, the band was in the correct position, so they never knew! Crazy, right?

Anyway, they couldnt take the band out during that surgery..and then she had to fight her insurance co to approve the band removal, but fiiiiinally she got the band taken out and then fiiiinally after that she had a revision to RNY in September. =)

Now, I am not saying this will happen to you or that you';d have any probs at all--this is just one story. We know many people who've had problems with the band and then many who've done well. And, to be fair, she did well with it for over a year, but, now she says she wishes she had never gotten the band and had gotten the RNY to begin with. But, again, this is only one case.

Get a number of stories and talk to your doc. He or she can recommend the best surgery for you, considering your own health. =)

Good luck with whatever path you take!

Check out my mom's page--she's MarciaM--and she's on my friend's list on my page if you can't find her!

Best wishes, Heather

Hi
I recently had VSG (Jan 15th).  I feel good and had no complications.  I think the type of surgery you choose is a very personal choice and consulting your doctor will help you make the right decision for you.

With that disclaimer over, I can say I selected VSG because I did not want to have a malabsorptive procedure and I did not want to risk all the complications that can occur with the band.

Most weight loss surgeons have seminars.  The can tell you all the pro's and con's and you can apply them to your preferences and needs.  You can also go to the procedure type forums to understand how the two procedures differ.

Good luck.  I researched and sould searched for a year and then made up my mind and two weeks later had surgery.

Best Wishes,
BG
